Special cases

A bar (accent) above a letter

The bar above the letter is a stressed sound. Is indicated only in small letters, in inscriptions written in capital letters it is not written at all or before the letter: 'Σ.

Some pairs of letters are consecutive, there are special rules for reading them. Here is an overview of the most basic:

Exceptions in writing

A frequently confusing exception in Greek is the letter σ. If it occurs at the beginning or in the middle of a word, it is written in its standard form. However,if it is at the end of a word, you use the letter ς. An example is the word Κνωσός [Knósos].

Numbers

Numbers 1, 3, 4 are used in three genera, others are already gender-independent.
