Σπιναλόγκα (Spinalonga)

Spinalonga is a small island belonging to Crete. Originally it was an island, but part of the peninsula of Spinalonga was split for defense purposes. In 1579 it was built on the most powerful Venetian fortress in Crete. In fact, it has never been conquered, but it fell into the hands of the Turks after the signing of the occupation (1715). A little confusing is that even the opposite peninsula still uses the name Spinalonga.
When they discovered leprosy in Crete at the beginning of the 20th century, the island of Spinalonga was not used as defense any more and thus it was chosen as the place where infectedpeople were kept. These people have led quite an ordinary life. They built their houses, streets, churches, cinemas, shops and even a library. A commute physician weekly contacted the inhabitants, but other contact with other people was banned. The locals founded families and even 20 healthy children were born there.
Nearby the island of Spinalonga is the greatest and most beautiful clarity of the water in Crete and which lead to passionate debates about what to do with the island further. Conservationists want this place preserved in its original condition, because you really can feel the history there. Hoteliershave great interest in this place because it definitely has a lot of potential. So do not miss the visitas next time, there may be a hotel standing there.
The journey to Spinalonga is possible in several ways. Either as an optional trip with a travel agency, which is obviously the most expensive option (about 30 €), by boat from the port of Agios Nikolaos, which will cost about 8-10 €, out of the town opposite Spinalonga by boat t - city of Plaka 7 € or you can try to convince one of the local fishermen, to take you to Spinalonga. This is usually of the best price, depending on your practice in bargaining and mutual sympathy.
