Santorini, for which the Greeks use the name Θήρα (Thira) which is an archipelago located about
110 km north of Crete. It was founded in the 17th century after an eruption of a volcano on the
island of Thera, which is considered as the most powerful explosion ever in the history of mankind.
It is said that just a shake of the tsunami caused by the explosion created the legend of Atlantis.
What was left of the former island, appropriately thrown into the environment, is today one of the
most attractive and generally probably the most expensive Greek islands. If you want to spend the
whole holiday there, the island as an accommodation and flights will be quite expensive. However,
Santorini will make up for its beauty.
We took a trip to Santorini from Crete and we were very satisfied and therefore we can advise
you how to do it. Santorini will really impress you. All the buildings on the island are Greek blue
and white colors and the whole island is a sunset that looks amazing here. When the sun goes down,
the people all start to clap and rejoice, and that is why it is a good idea to plan a trip to Santorini
through the night.
The journey from Crete is best on a boat, which runs several times during the day. Hellenic
Seaways is always available, the fast boat leaves from Heraklion and arrives
in Santorini in two hours, then goes back daily at 17.55 and arrives at 19.30 in Heraklion. The price of a
trip on this boat is 56 €. If this sounds a lot, to us it did, too. To Santorini you can get there cheaper.
We found out that the most optimal variant is the ANEK Lines ship that runs once a week and it only costs
26 €. The problem is that if you want a return ticket, you have to spend a week on Santorini. The boat
leaves from Heraklion on Sunday at 18.05 and arrives at 23.30 in Santorini and goes back on Saturday at
3.40 am and arrives in Heraklion at around 9.30. Therefore, it is best to go one way with this boat and
the other with the more expensive one to save at least some money.
